Wasn't it Popeye who
used to say "I yam what I yam and
that's all that I yam"?
There is no more
freeing event in life than getting to
the point where you live the life that
YOU have determined. I spent a large
number of years more concerned with
satisfying the expectations of people in
my life than being Me and the result was
a tremendous amount of frustration,
dread and weariness. If I had continued
on that path, I truly believe that
illness would have been right around the
corner. There's only so long you can
live a life that is not authentically
You before your organism starts to
rebel.
As an adult, and as a father, I spend a
large percentage of my waking hours
working. I deeply feel the privilege and
responsibility of providing for my
children. It stands to reason,
therefore, that in my quest to be
authentically Me, I must choose to be
involved in a profession that is
authentically me as well.
Vast numbers of people spend the
majority of their time as adults,
working in professions or jobs that have
no connection with who they are
authentically. Their work is drudgery.
Their results are unspectacular and
unsatisfying. And they live with a
gnawing sense of "what it could
be". As challenging as it is to right
the wrong and embark on an entirely new
career path in your late 30's or 40's or
even 50's, I believe it is the ONLY way
to live.
